There are several quaint streets leading up to the Kyomizu temple in Kyoto, which offer some very worthwhile (albeit "touristy") souvenir shopping and browsing opportunities - including Ninenzaka, (a.k.a Nineizaka 二年坂 / 二寧坂 ), Sannenzaka, (a.k.a Sanneizaka 三年坂 / 産寧坂 ) and Chawanzaka (茶碗坂 ).
I am guessing that Chawanzaka is the one refered to as "potter slope" in some English guidebooks because "Chawan" is a word for a ceramic bowl. But actually, you will find stores selling pottery on all of these little streets - especially Kiyomizu-yaki pottery (清水焼 ).
