Gays have been executed in Iran, Saudi Arabia and other countries. Homophobia lives, sadly. It's important for gay world travelers to know where it exists, as we should have information in order to protect ourselves and those who we meet in our travels. Talk of boycotts is sometimes on-topic, as some travelers may wish not to give their money to regimes oppressive to gays and lesbians. Personally, I want to know about these things, because you hear conflicting stories.
As a side note, I'm not sure how much political talk is too much, but we also don't want a Disney-fied, sanitized forum of happy, pappy gay people when the reality for most of the world's gays and lesbians is fear, oppression and self-hatred. My $0.02.
