Probably couldn't hurt to help keep it clean. We never gate checked an expensive stroler - only cheap ones, so didn't really care what happened to it. From my recollection, even gate checking without a bag never resulted in a noticably dirty stroller. When traveling with an expensive stroller, we obtained a new factory box and carefully boxed it and checked it at the ticket counter.
