My question is, are they at all effective?
I've been looking at some with noise-canceling features (btw thanks for the opinions in this forum) but don't want to invest in them if I can get an effective set for free during the flights.
In a related question, how are the DVD players they have available on the 767's?
If you think of noise reduction as effective as earplugs, then that is essentially what the AC Exec First headseats are like. They go on top of the ear and IMHO, become uncomfortable after an hour or two pressing against your ear. I personally am not a fan of them. IMHO, they are cheap quality. After several transatlantic flights in the past year I bought a pair of the BOSE QC2's and they have been the best investment that I have made. Admittedly I was a bit hesitant at first due to the price, but I am happy I did so. Not only do they go around the ear but you are truly in your own world. Engine noise, crying babies, loud mouth passengers, etc. are pretty much cancelled out.

Even in the office my coworkers email me just to look up around the corner where they've been trying to get my attention
