Some city councils in the UK every year go a bit mad and try to re-brand Christmas as "Winterval" or some other ridiculous name. Birmingham did it a few years ago, and the London borough of Lambeth (I think) also tried a similar trick this year. They usually have to relent after pressure not just from Christans, but many people of other faiths too (and also non-religious people) who say that they a) are not at all offended by a country celebrating Christmas and b) to assume that an non-Christian will be offended by a public celebration of Christmas is rather an insult to one's intelligence.
In Leicester they celebrate the Hindu festival of lights, and then leave the lights up for Christmas, so it works both ways really.
