Because the most a Platinum Studio is worth is 2200 points. A Silver 2 bedroom "costs" 3500 points so you would have to use two years of your studio points to afford one week of the silver unit....therefore paying two years' worth of maintenance fees which would most likely be more than one years' MFs for the silver week in the first place.
However, within the same sized unit, I agree that it makes more sense to buy platinum as the MFs are the same whether it is platinum or bronze. A platinum unit will cost you more upfront though.
