Tri/Quad band GSM phones

Long-winded rant:

I'm going to be in Singapore this month and wanted to get a new phone. I have T-Mobile in NYC and my Motorola phone sucks. I need a world phone that will work (most) everywhere that isn't provider-specific. I currently have a tri-band phone that T-Mobile unlocked but if I don't let them know what countries I'm in it won't roam. So I end up buying a local provider SIM card. I really miss the Panasonic GU-87 that only worked with AT&T (but the coverage in NYC was iffy at best).

***My question is*** does anyone have any experience with buying GSM phones in S'pore that will work with US providers? If so, what models? My criteria is a well-lit keypad, flat # buttons, easy texting features and a nice extra would be customizable color rings (the GU-87 had this) and ringtones. I'm also wondering what the price ranges are in S'pore as the Nokia website has none.
