I was somewhat curious about the pliers comment too. Perhaps in the case of tongue piercings, the pliers are needed to hold one thing while the "clip"-like thing holding the piercing in place is removed from the other?
"Ring opening pliers" seems to come up in Google searches, FWIW or not.
... there is even stuff about removing piercings before time of birth.
