That is really rude behaviour! It hasn't happened to me but I am curious. Did the person have to pay for the ticket themselves and if so, were they able to cancel it? Do they have a track record of this?

Sounds like they weren't serious to start with- if you commit to a trip then you organise things (time off work, pet care etc) so you can go away.
