Thanks for the reassurance that we did the right thing. Re whether telling a desk clerk would alert management, the clerk had to bring a "manager" out to check the phone logs to find out when the call was made and as we left I heard him on the phone asking to speak with somebody, so I guess the chances are better than even.

So far only one other poster has reported a similar occurence, so maybe it's not that widespread.
