One more vote for the SoundDock.

If I want portability I will use earphones. Anything else is simply luggage.

After listening to the various options I went with the Bose system as it sounds far better across the spectrum than other currently available choices.

I also travel for extended periods of time and want sounds in the room when there. As susch I take the Bose sytem with me. It is luggage but it is flexible for all electricity voltages I encounter.

Here at home in Japan my alarm clock of choice was chosen for its ability to always show the correct time. That is paramount with me. Many alarm clocks here catch a wave sent out by various towers across the country and constantly stay set to the correct time right to the second. Cannot see getting a unit that did not have this functionality.

And, more an opinion than a criticism, but I thought the the iHome unit only operates on USA voltage. This strikes me as rather limited for an item as borderless as the iPod. Great sound but reminiscent of the all in one stereo systems of the 70's (8-track, turntable, radio). In short, go for modular components and put together a better system all around.

For a room for which your goal is primarily good sounds from an iPod the Bose is clearly the superior sytem. For a bedroom where you have limited space and want a cute system that covers your clock and iPod listening needs over a limited area and at varying volumes, an iHome may be the best call.
