In the case of JR East, the space between the cars are to be designated nonsmoking as well.
Ah yes - Just noticed all the posters at the railway stations advertising big changes to the services from December 10. That may be good news.
Probably for most tourists to Japan, the greatest improvement would come if JR would allow the Japan Rail Pass to be used on Nozomi Shinkansen.
That would open up a "train load" of non-smoking seats to the JR pass users.
