Before joining, I also checked out Sports Club LA at the FS. I went on a weekday at around 5:00pm. Every machine was taken, including the weight machines. Very crowded. Very disappointing.
I have used 24 hour fitness which is just OK.
* in SF Bay area is too crowded at peak times
* with haphazard queing for popular machines.
In OR or MO, not so crowsed, less queing issues.
* shower area much too small and steamy, could never get dry.
* generally underventilated and clammy air.
* good variety of machines.
* maintenance of stairmaster-type machines is haphazaard;
step/lap counters go blank, reset, staff uninterested.
* cybex machines not bolted to floor and placed close together
+ great opportunity to skewer bystanders
- opportunity to topple machine and trap myself underneath.
* no posted price but many come on offers in Metro alt-weekly.
+ 24 hrs has migrated to something approaching 24/7 availability.
- No 24 hr fitness near NYC.
Equinox
+ in NY area posts open on Sunday hours.
? shower changing area undermaintained
? trainers of irregular quality and dedication
- expensive
