Basically, you can hop around inside each continent but once you leave that continent, you generally can't go back to it. And yes, you generally need to keep moving in one direction, but it is easy to accumulate the necessary 66.67k miles (equalling 100k q points if in J (D) or F (A), achieving EXP.
