It's common practice for people in Vancouver to drive or bus down to Seattle to fly out of Seatac instead of YVR - Even though this drive can take up to three hours or more. In fact, my father is doing this next week for a trip to the British Virgin islands.
Flights are often cheaper and it allows you to feed into other networks not serviced out of Vancouver, such as Southwest, US Airways, Frontier etc.
