I did once take a flight with Gulf Air DXB-AUH Flight GF603 IIRC. The hassle of going through the airport prior to departure / arrival and then having to still take a 20-30 min taxi ride to the city from AUH meant it was pointless. The flight was about 15 min alone, don't think the wheels went up.
Reminds me of DOH - BAH (QR). I couldn't believe it that they not only had time to dish out food (full loads) but the captain still came on to say we'd reached cruising height...less than 2 minutes later he came back over the speakers to announce our descent!
Of course you also risk delays if flying verse taxi'ing as at least taxis have some flexibility over their routing. (My DOH - BAH took about 2 hrs due to congestion).
