If the other party was travelling on the same reservation or had been booked through the other persons account or linked somehow, then I can agree that it should be no problem to phone up and cancel.
But, for me to phone up and say that so_and_so is travelling on this flight with me, now please cancel his resrvation. I find that a bit odd.
Jury duty does not mean that a person in in-communicado. Arrangements can be made to get the message through.
