I think the REAL question is:
Is anyone actually silly enough to take a cab from NRT into town TWICE?
I know lots of people who've taken a cab from NRT, none who've repeated the experience.
EDIT: Once people know you have a connection with Tokyo, they tend to share their own experiences: either first hand, or what they were told by a friend or relative. What I’ve learnt is that practically every one who took a taxi from the airport was traumatised by their experience of Japan, or became so intimidated by the fear of sky high prices that they hardly ventured out of their hotel rooms during their stay there.
Perhaps the common denominator is that those caught out are precisely those who hadn’t done any research before arriving (or who don’t pay attention to earnest advice –OP please note!). And Tokyo, more than any European, Arab or North American city I’ve been to, amply rewards visitors prepared to invest a little time in preliminary investigations.
