Is your connecting flight domestic?

For an international connection, 2.5 hours is plenty unless your AA flight arrives very late, but don't count on using the UA RCC. The last time I did the T1-T2 thing, I was shuttled to T2 immediately after the security re-screen upon T1 arrival.
