I have only had this problem once in an AA flight. I have a very nice Dakota rolling suit case. For whatever reason, the AAgent in LAS must had had a bad day and stated I had to check it in.
The bad did not fit the sizer [wheels], but yet EASILY [as the other poster stated] fits in the overhead. I stood the my ground and the supervisor allowed it, but yet five years later I am still upset.

My Dakota bag weighs 10 lbs empty. This has caused me serious grief in Australia and NZ where the 'weighing spirit' is very alive and where they only allow 15lbs [a ridiculus amount when the airplane mfg rates the overheads for 80lbs +] and the rest of the 'competitive' world has a 40lbs standard.
I am for following the rules, but sometimes the AAgents use their power indiscrimately. Everyone knows how a standard rolling suit case looks and that they will fit in overheads.

I think that the more generous carryon weigh of AA and domestic AA carriers is a competitive advantage over other international carriers for the normal business traveller. As stated above, I can't see how a business person can do a multi day trip on 15 lbs.
