I can offer a bit of historical perspective on this. In the early 1980’s when Marriott was developing its Courtyard concept the initial prototype property was built in Atlanta. Several years later the president of Doubletree at the time told me he had sent someone to the Atlanta building department to photograph the plans. Doubletree then started a product duplicating Courtyard with some differences. I can not remember what they called the product but it was differentiated from Doubletree Hotels. The rooms were somewhat smaller than Courtyard and they were sometimes built in a high rise configuration. El Segundo, California was where one of the first of these products was built very close to one of the first California Courtyards. Several years later Hilton introduced Hilton Garden Inn which was generally acknowledged as a copy of Courtyard. Obviously over the years names as well as owners have changed. Also in expanding the brands, especially through franchising, all the products have changed or at least become less consistent.
