Thanks for the input. I guess her best bet is to say nothing until check-in, then just say her mother isn't accompanying her due to a last minute emergency.

Her mother's seat is a middle seat (they have booked 28A&B), so I would imagine unless the flight was overbooked, they shouldn't need to use that seat for another pax if it only becomes free at check-in time.
