Doubletrees are all over the map in terms of quality and amenity level, partially because they are the accumulation of a number of properties from other chains. Some Doubletrees are very nice, especially the Doubletree Suites which were bought en masse from Guest Quarters a few years ago. Those were not rebranded as Embassy Suites partially because they were not set up for the free breakfast.

But other Doubletrees are pretty sad, such as some of the ex-Red Lion west coast properties (Downtown Boise, anyone?). Doubletrees are sort of like Radissons in that respect. Just because it's a Doubletree doesn't mean anything.

HGIs are newer construction, cookie-cutter, properties. I wouldn't say that they are Motels, because they do serve food, they do have an exercise setup, and they do have meeting room facilities. They are deisgned to be a step up from Hampton Inns, and a step down from a "mainline" Hilton.
