I had the misfortune of travelling to and from Buenos Aires this past weekend on American Airlines through Miami. It was a 777 with a seating plan of 2-5-2.
Yes, 5 (FIVE!) seats across!
I noticed on seatguru.com that most other airlines use the practical 3-3-3. Why American did this is beyond me. Imagine flying solo and getting stuck in that middle seat, surrounded by two people on either side. I am praying that Air Canada does not follow this configuration.
CX uses 2-3-2 configuration within Asia on it's 777's, IIRC. I would hope for this of the 3-3-3 as best options, but do those details even get made with placing orders? Or are fit & finish decisions made later?
And to further digress, their video controllers are in the TOP of the armrest. Not only is it highly uncomfortable, but annoying as well. When you naturally rest your elbow on the armrest while watching tv, you end up inadvertantly pressing a nice combination of buttons, ranging from 'call attendant' to the volume button to the reading light. Brilliant AA, brilliant.

That, it would seem to me, to be fairly standard. US on a recent FCO flight had the controller with the retractable cord on the side of the side, but it was only slighttly less of a pain with my fat a** to wedge it back into place several times per flight. Depending on your size, of course, YMMV.
