Interesting that you brought that up. In October flying TED from LAS to DEN, a very chatty female pilot sat between my cousin and I in the exit row. Somewhere in our conversation with her, I brought up Captain Meryl and she quickly rolled her eyes. She said that Captain Meryl is a "sensationalist" and over exaggerates many things. I wish that she didn't say that because I don't enjoy her articles as much anymore.
I wonder if the chatty pilot simply had some sour grapes or a dose of the green-eyed monster? I've never found Captain Meryl's columns to be sensationalistic in the least; in fact, she often seems to downplay things and otherwise put passengers fears to rest. Maybe the chatty pilot is jealous that Captain Meryl has her own column in USAToday.
Although... she did once answer a question about the scariest thing that had happened to her as a pilot by describing having to go out onto the wing of a prop plane in flight...
