Update:

Delta's system did credit me for those Labor Day flights. I also got my American Express credits just fine. I had checked with the counter agent at the airport to see what the computer showed as to the SkyMiles account it was pointed to, and it was pointed to the non-closed account. Thanks everyone for your help, now I need to go post another topic.
