I frequently fly between VA and Boston on routes that partially use the Delta Connection. This usually means that L fares are not available. However, once I was offered an L fare at a certain price and was asked by the DL agent if I wanted and upgradable fare for $3 more each way. I guess I was very lucky. On other routes, the difference is far more significant.
