Any recommendations on where to stay - somewhere decent and very central. The Radisson seems the only chain hotel. Any experinces?
Depends what you want to get up to. The old city centre is very compact, so once you've 'done' the castle, that's more or less it. A half-day round-trip to Auschwitz is highly recommended; macabre an experience as it may be... It'll cost about GBP 50 to hire a taxi to drive you there, take you to both of the main camps, wait and take you back.

As for places to stay, I was very pleased with the Hotel Copernicus (Relais & Chateux).

I wasn't overly-enamoured by the food in Krakow and as for the plum vodka - lethal stuff!!!
