I have seen this oddity as well. Heading to Denver, the boarding announcement was made despite the gate information displaying Washington D.C. Only when First class passengers were boarding when another agent started correcting the display. Since UA's flights appear to be minimal on CLT, it probably isn't a source of much confusion.
