Although I don't hail originally from Cork, I now live here, and have spent time all around Ireland, living and working. The South of Ireland, as accessed from Shannon has so much to offer .....
Cork in 2005 is the European Capital of Culture (hardly a title for a "dull" location) and has much to experience :-
Blarney Castle - Kiss the Blarney Stone
Midleton Distillery - See some of the finest Irish Whiskey being made
Kinsale - Beautiful small Fishing Village, and gourmet capital of Ireland
Golf - Fota Island - Recent Irish Open venue; Old Head of Kinsale - most famous and spectacular course in the South of Ireland
Cobh - Titanic Exhibition and Historical Location
(For starters)
In any case, enjoy your trip, wherever you end up !!

The south has a lot to offer. Old Head is incredibly dramatic. But, you cant seriously tell a first time visitor to take Cork over Tralee, Dingle, Ballybunion, Adare, Bunratty, Lahinch, Doolin, Killaloe, Cong and Galway can you? Its only 5 days. Even Kilarney would have to be higher up on the list.
