Been there and done that. I have found myself afoul of the time remaining before expiry problem. It hapens when you are always on the go, and you forget. Just try doing a blur of domestic/transborder in the 6 months leading up to an overseas trip and see how easy it is. If eveybody on the board has always renewed their registrationbefore their birthday on the month of expiry, I'll shut up

While we are all personally responsible for ensuring our documents are in place, there are times when we rely on our Travel Coordinators and EA's to ensure that a mistake does not happen. Just last week I was reminded by my EA that I needed an updated Visa for Australia for my upcoming trip. If I were left to my own devices, the pax that the OP described could have been me.
