Airlines don't make up the entry rules; countries do.
If an airline allows a passenger to fly into the country without a valid documents (visa, etc...), they can be fined by the destination country. Most third world country will require a 6 months validity on your passport.
I had to go through a whole bunch of ordeals to prove to SQ that the printout that I have on hand is a valid approval for a visa-on-arrival to Myanmar last year.
