Did you try CHC? Air New Zealand runs a non-stop service to Christchurch from LAX. Several people, including myself, have found it easier to obtain award seats on that flight when compared to AKL (NZ) or SYD (UA).
Not to mention that CHC is the closest North American gateway to ZQN.
