All SYD depatures and flight 107 to JFK use Terminal 4.
All other Qantas depatures (MEL, BNE & AKL) use TBIT.
Not sure the reasoning. For the OP I wouldn't bet on being able to through check luggage. I've had through booked tickets on other partners and was unable to through check luggage on either leg.
