I was once visiting a friend in Prague. He took me to a house where some people he knew (not friends, really) lived becasue they had a connection for him to rent a flat. Apparently at the time (1994) rentals were hard to come by and a kind of underground network existed for "illegal" rentals such as sub-leases. Some kinf of a holdback from the recent Soviet occupation era that was still on the books.
While we were there, the poice raided the house. Apparently the occupants were suspected of breaking into a flat and stealing furniture! The Czech police separated everyone, and began the questioning. Since I had an American passport, quite a few eyebrows were raised, phone calls made, etc. I was questioned for about 15 minutes and they must have been convinced that I just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and let me and my friend go. I still tease my friend about bringing me to a gang residence and nearly getting me arrested. (I had a security clearance at the time, so I was really sweating it out).
