I had a similar situation last Spring. LHR-MUC non-changeable cheap Y, and MUC-FRA-BKK in C. The check-in agent at LHR, did not let me change to LHR-FRA even in Y class. The reason is that the LHR-MUC was non-refundable and non-changeable. So, if I wanted to fly straight LHR-FRA to connect to BKK, I was told to buy another tix LHR-FRA which was way too expensive.
