Going back to my friend at BA............ and also that BA employees can tag friends with 'special' status on the BA system, which I believe can help now and again but this no longer sounds like the case.

Never heard of that one. Pilots do not have access to any booking system or anything to do with the BAEC. Any attempt to mess with the system is likely to lead to a disciplinary fairly quickly.
