Similar experience in NZ with Air NZ. Apparently, a stewardess sued when an overweight carry-on dropped and broke her neck when she was opening the baggage compartment. Thus, the limit is now 7kg and they zealously weigh all carry-ons that look heavier than 3kg.

Never had similar experience elsewhere. Not even on the same trip from Singapore to NZ on Air NZ.
