Yes, you're correct. Many of the guest services directories usually ought to be replaced pretty regularly, too.

I like the Bible idea. I'll start doing so there, and I'll use page 620 so that this can become a FT theme instead of limiting us to just Starwood members and properties. I think I'll like rediscovering which rooms I've already stayed in before.

I've thought of putting my initials and flight date under the armrest ashtray lid in my favorite seats on Delta planes to see which actual planes I fly more than once. I don't figure that there's any other reason for ashtrays to still exist on US commercial planes. (Requires something like a perm marker, though.)

I'm also a fan of wheresgeorge.com, and this seems like the hotel equivalent.
