Many many threads with the same question, but I recall the answer was T-3 hours unless with status or in a premium class then anytime on day.
My brother was once flying in J (as a Silver member) from LHR to JNB (having come in from Orlando earlier in the day). Staff at LHR would not allow him to check-in until three hours before, despite status and cabin.
