For me, if I know I won't be checking in till past 6pm, I'd call the hotel early during the day to confirm my booking and potentially lock in the upgrade (if there is one).

There is no excuse for the Platinum amenity and lost luggage issues. You can get the amenity points posted by calling SPG or the hotel.

Being a Platinum does not automatically entitled you to free breakfast (like Hilton Diamond does), free water or free newspaper (though most would offer these two + a robe).
Thanks for the input on breakfast. My original arrival time was 11pm - advised on my e-booking so I doubt the 2am check in made much difference to the room I was given. Anyway it sounds as though I need to contact the hotel.
