QF fly a 747-400 direct from LHR to SYD a few years back - of course with very few passengers and no cargo (ie - totally uneconomic) just so that they could show they could do it.
What makes the HKG-LHR route completely unremarkable is that BA & CX do it every day. The general public will skip over the detail of a different routing, and thus this flight won't achieve any publicity objectives at all - for this, they need to do a route which is not currently possible - such as LHR-SYD, or something like that.
