By "pays the hotel directly for the room," do you mean that we pay Expedia, then Expedia makes a seperate payment to the hotel for the room? Generally, the payment is probably somewhat less than the customer pays? For example, Expedia sells a room for $300, it collects the $300. It may then send a check for $200 to the hotel to cover the cost of the room?

(I checked my Amex and the billing was to Expedia.)
