My roll on is slightly smaller than yours and I always have to gate check it. However, as Flymeaway says, its actually pretty nice. Don't have to go to baggage claim and don't have to take it on and find overhead space. When you deplane, they generally have it waiting for you, although sometimes there is a brief wait. Bottom line, take it to the gate w/you.
