Darn, if you don't want to rent a car .....

It's not that bad, the shuttles will take you right to the agency. And IAH is fairly far from everywhere, so taxis aren't going to be cheap.

There are shuttle vans you could probably take, but I don't think they go all the way to Clear Lake area (JSC). The Galleria (shopping center) is quite famous; a lot of people from Mexico fly to Houston just to go shopping there (not my thing).

Houston's just not really a tourist destination, IMHO. Hopefully others who actually live in the city can come up with better suggestions. Closest suburb to IAH is Humble, maybe you coud do an interntet search on it, the taxi fare there shouldn't be quite so bad.
