I think you can restart the 3 year cycle by any activity in the account.

I think both Diner's club and Starwood cards will transfer into M&M. So, all you have to do is transfer in 1000 miles(or points) Starwood does not charge for the transfer, DC charges 95 points for every 1000 transfered the last time I looked.
