Seabourn Spirit Incident Statement

Updated November 7, 2005

At 0530 local time on November 5, 2005, the cruise ship Seabourn Spirit was approached by two small armed boats, the occupants of which attempted to board the vessel. Seabourn Spirit was off the Somalia coast in northeastern Africa and en route to Mombasa, Kenya during a 16-day voyage from Alexandria, Egypt.

The ship's crew immediately initiated a trained response and as a result of protective and evasive measures taken, the occupants of the small craft were unable to gain access to Seabourn Spirit

Seabourn Spirit is presently in Victoria, Seychelles with all guests and crew safe and secure. Most guests are taking advantage of sightseeing opportunities today. Guests disembarking tomorrow will be flown by chartered aircraft to Mombasa to continue with their previously scheduled travel plans. Guests due to arrive in Mombasa to embark for the continuing voyage will be flown to Victoria and embarked on the vessel tomorrow. The ship will remain in Victoria through Wednesday and then depart to begin its scheduled cruise to Singapore.

The security of guests, staff and ships is the industry's highest priority. Cruise ship security standards are strictly guided by internationally approved protocols. Individual cruise lines, including Seabourn, also have well established security assessment procedures and protocols. We are very pleased that the established training and procedures worked in this instance.

Saturday's incident on Seabourn Spirit was a highly unusual and isolated occurrence, and serves to demonstrate the efficacy of existing security protocols and the ability of ship's officers and crews to protect their guests.

Seabourn Spirit is an ultra luxury cruise ship registered in the Bahamas, and operated by Seabourn Cruise Line, located in Miami, Florida. The ship is carrying 151 passengers and 161 crew.
