Philosophically, my feeling is if they take your money they should give you the points. That said, I could see where allowing this practice on a widespread basis could lead to all sorts abuse and chaos.
I suspect that I may have been awarded my points by mistake. But I also made an honest mistake myself, so in some regards it was a wash. I probably could have called guest services and begged them to take the charges off my credit card, but my view was the situation was my fault and I shouldn't expect the hotel to cover for me. I viewed the points as a consolation.
Its not as if Marriott hadn't done favors for me....they have!
