Something very similar happened to me on US. My connection RDU-PIT-IND was cancelled and I had to spend the night in PIT, the next morning the connection was delayed and I missed my meeting. I wrote a letter to consumer affairs and told them that I wanted a refund of $593 for the price of the ticket and they sent it to me.

I hope you have the same luck that I did
