It will charge with the FireWire cable, but in order to slim down the designs they have left out the circuitry that allows for file transfer via FireWire.
Not quite a deal breaker for us getting a Nano, but we are still using Macs that only have USB 1.1, so it'll be slow transfers until upgrade time.
